As an intern you will receive orientation in the mission and functions of the Portland District through on-the-job training on rotational assignments in several offices and/or functional areas such as Operations, Project Management, and Construction. Interns will be assigned special developmental projects; attend professional meetings, seminars, and symposia; receive on-the-job instruction, and receive formal classroom training in technical subjects.
Interns will perform work assignments designed to provide advanced practical application and experience of theories and principles in structural engineering. Typical work assignments include developing designs for structural features; researching design related reference material; performing structural computations (concrete design, steel design, stability analysis, seismic design, etc), structural modeling, providing quality assurance for field construction activities; analyzing and monitoring construction schedules; testing of materials and equipment; scheduling; developing detailed scopes and cost estimates for contract modifications.
Basic Qualifications for any Engineering Position:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statistics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
To qualify for this Civil Structural Engineering position you must also have:
1) Graduated from your undergraduate education with Superior Academic Achievement. OR
2) Completed 1 full year of Graduate level education (in the field). OR
3) A full year of specialized experience that provided professional knowledge of civil engineering principles and concepts as well as the ability to apply standard engineering practices, methods and techniques to perform limited design work. You need to be familiar with related engineering disciplines, particularly structural.
Superior academic achievement is defined as graduating with a GPA of a) 3.0 or higher for the entire 4 yrs. OR b) 3.5 or higher based on an average of the required courses completed in the major field. OR c) 3.5 or higher based on the required courses in the major field completed during the last two years of the curriculum.
Promotion to the Full performance level is contingent upon satisfactory completion of training plan requirements and continuous satisfactory performance.

Internship Opportunities Sought for Summer 2009 Undergraduate Scholars
NOAA Office of Education (OEd) is seeking NOAA offices and programs nationwide to host Undergraduate Scholarship recipients in the Educational Partnership Program (EPP) and Hollings Scholarship Program. Internship opportunities are being sought for 150 scholarship recipients to participate in a 10-week OEd paid internship in NOAA-related research, technological, policy, management, and education activities beginning May 26, 2009.
Host offices are requested to identify a discrete project that the undergraduate scholar can complete within a 10-week timeframe. Forms used to identify a project may be found at http://www.oesd.noaa.gov/Hollings_info.html or http://epp.noaa.gov.

Qualifications
- U.S. citizens
- Full-time undergraduate students majoring in NOAA-related disciplines, including but not limited to, oceanic, environmental, and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remote sensing technology, physical and social sciences including, geography, physics, hydrology, or teacher education that support NOAAs programs and mission.
Compensation
- The Scholarship recipients receive an OEd funded award that includes academic assistance, a 10-week paid internship, housing assistance, conference travel and round-trip travel to the internship site.
- The NOAA OEd Undergraduate Scholarship Programs provide NOAA with a valuable mechanism to achieve its vision, mission, and goals of the NOAA Strategic Plan. The Undergraduate Scholarship Programs supports the Agencys cross-cutting priorities of promoting environmental literacy and developing, valuing, and sustaining a world-class workforce.

Department of Transportation - Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) Intern Program
The Washington Center is pleased to announce an opportunity for students to participate in a fully-funded (plus stipend) internship program with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Selected students will have the opportunity to intern for FAA offices and participate in an experiential training program. Student participants will gain relevant skills and knowledge, explore career options within the Department of Transportation and other federal agencies, and develop a greater awareness of the role of the federal government. Internship sites for the fall 2009 semester are in Washington, D.C.
Qualifications
- Be a currently enrolled student in an accredited college or university
- Be of junior status or above (60 academic credit hours) at the time of the internship
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Complete all components of the application packet
- All students who meet these criteria are eligible to apply; however, Native American and Asian American students, as well as students with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply
Desired Majors
- Engineering (all fields)
- Computer Science/Information Technology
Compensation
Selected students will receive The Washington Center program fee and housing fee at no charge and receive a substantial weekly stipend. Students have the option of living in fully-furnished housing facilities within blocks of the DC metro line. If students choose not to live in Washington Center provided housing, the stipend is increased. All stipends are based on a 36 hour work week and payroll is distributed on the 15th and 30th of each month. The Washington Center is the official employer and must have the I-9 and W-4 tax forms on file. Direct deposit is available.
