Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering!

Civil and Environmental Engineering encompasses an extremely diverse range of expertise in engineering design and construction, including bridges and buildings, roadways, highways, rapid transit alternatives, processes to clean our drinking water and our wastewater and the foundations on which all structures stand.

Within our Department, we have over 10 full-time faculty, 6 full-time research faculty, and a full-time technician. Our faculty specialize in research in the following areas:

In addition, the Department maintains close ties with consultants and engineers in the Portland metropolitan area, many of whom serve as adjunct faculty teaching practice-oriented courses and contributing to faculty research. Many of our students are also involved in internship programs with the multitude of engineering firms in the Portland region.

Other strong components of our program include a large scholarship program and active student organizations, such as the ASCE Student Chapter that participates in the annual concrete canoe and steel bridge contests, Engineers Without Borders, and Institute of Transportation Engineers.

The Department strives for excellence in teaching, research and community service and we are committed to making your academic experience with us a success.

Sincerely,
Bill Fish, Acting Chair and Professor
